When I look around the hypothetical urban classroom in my mind, I see a group of diverse learners with all sorts of abilities, skills, talents, passions, and backgrounds. My desire as a teacher is to cultivate that diversity, creating a learning environment that facilitates critical thinking about scientific principles, creative hypothesizing and experimenting fueled by scientific literacy, and a broad yet thorough knowledge of vital biological premises appropriate for high school students, all according to most recent science standards.

As an urban educator, I expect to face challenges such as impoverished, hungry students, lack of English language skills in a proportionally higher amount of students, social issues involving pieces like race and domestic violence, and low achievement levels. My desire is to empower students as lifelong learners and members of society by providing students with as many experiential learning opportunities as possible to illustrate meaningful connections to real life. I aim to inspire students to see content as something to be discovered - not just something to memorize through a balanced mix of direct instruction using demonstration and student-led instruction. With that my goal is to to create an environment that is both strong in self-efficacy, a sense of ownership, and a sense of safety.
